This Privacy Policy explains how The Angling Edge ("we", "us", "our") collects, uses, and protects your information when you use our mobile application and related services.
1. Who we are
The Angling Edge is a fishing logbook application that helps you record catches, manage venues, receive personalised advice through Edgewise, and optionally share data with people you trust.
2. Information we collect
We collect information you provide directly, including:
- Account details — email address, password (stored securely hashed), and profile information.
- Catch log data — species, weight, venue, swim, bait, rig, weather, notes, dates and related metadata.
- Photos — images you attach to catches, stored with your account.
- Location data — if you grant permission, GPS coordinates from photos or venue entries to improve your log and weather context.
- Sharing preferences — who you choose to share catches or venues with.
- Usage data — basic technical logs needed to operate, secure, and improve the service (e.g. error reports, device type).
3. How we use your information
We use your information to:
- Provide and maintain the app — saving catches, syncing photos, and displaying your history.
- Power Edgewise — answering your questions using your catch history and conditions data.
- Enable sharing — showing data to people or clubs you explicitly authorise.
- Process data exports — preparing zip files and sending download links to your email.
- Communicate with you — account verification, password resets, export notifications, and support responses.
- Keep the service secure and comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell your fishing log. We do not browse your catches for marketing purposes.
4. Privacy by default
Your catch log is private by default. Other anglers cannot see your data unless you turn sharing on. Your catches are never used to generate insight for other users — only for your own Edgewise answers and the features you use. Nothing is posted publicly or shared with other users automatically.
You control sharing at a granular level — by venue, by person, or not at all — and you can revoke access at any time from the Sharing section in your profile.
5. Who can see your data
- You — always.
- People you share with — only the catches or venues you choose.
- Club members — only at linked venues, when you participate in club sharing.
- Our team — only when necessary to fix a problem you have reported, keep the service running, or where the law requires it. Staff do not routinely access catch logs.
- Service providers — trusted infrastructure partners (e.g. cloud hosting, email delivery) who process data on our behalf under contract and only as needed to operate the service.
6. Edgewise and automated processing
Edgewise uses your logged catches and available condition data to generate personalised fishing advice in response to your questions. This processing is limited to serving you — Edgewise answers are not a public feed that other anglers can read, and your log is never pooled or used to advise other users.
7. Data retention
We retain your account and catch data for as long as your account is active. Export download links expire after 7 days. If you request account deletion, we will delete or anonymise your personal data within a reasonable period, subject to any legal retention requirements.
8. Data exports
You can request a full export of your catches and photos from Profile → Export my catches. We email a download link to your registered address. You may request one export per day.
9. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or port your personal data, and to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise these rights, contact us using the details below.
10. Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your data in transit and at rest. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to safeguard your information.
11. Children's privacy
The Angling Edge is not directed at children under 13 (or the applicable age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the revised version on this page and update the "Last updated" date. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
